L O N G B E A C H A L L - S T A R S #08-Long Beach-WR-Al Toon (Henry Bodine) Taking Toon was nice, but maybe only as trade bait. Paul Trazie is All-World. Truthfully, Long Beach needed a linebacker with this pick, Kenny Arnold would have meant a lot more to this team than Toon will. #18-Long Beach-OL-Clarke Bennett The team was already quite strong on the OL. Bennett is a solid pick, but Tim Greenleaf would have been better for Long Beach. #32-Long Beach-QB-Ken O'Brien (Matt Wheeler) Loses his great name to become one of the worst QBs of the modern NFL era. Sad. But a great player in the APFL. He's a small upgrade over Tony Christian. On a team with such a good roster, it's okay to make small upgrades. #56-Long Beach-SS-Curtis O'Conner Picked right on schedule, this guy will be the best linebacker on the team. #68-Long Beach-WR-Gary Beauchamp Too slow for special teams, I can only see this guy stumbling across the goal line in the red zone. Maybe a speed upgrade can make him into a possession receiver. #80-Long Beach-FB-Randall Sutter The AMIR say it's a steal. At #80, anyone who plays is a steal. With Mike Penn and Joey Adkins on the roster, what will he do? Carry water. OVERALLL: Long Beach is a very, very good team. I don't want to play them. But they missed their golden opportunity in the draft to add two top linebackers. That is the last missing piece for them. GRADE: D
